What a joy and an honour to have been invited to Monstrale International Film Festival!
I had the pleasure of attending the 2024 edition of this short film festival in the town of Halle, Germany, to present Please, a work I translated and subtitled.
It was a great opportunity to talk about the translation and adaptation of humour, cultural references, and the role translation plays in culture valorization. As an audiovisual translator, I often work on local films from small production companies that make it to international festivals, so it’s truly a delight for me to bring underrepresented cultures to the big screen (especially in a world of North American and Hollywood screen domination!).
I loved the opportunity, and I hope it won’t be the last to highlight how much of our conceptual landscape is shaped by language and culture. It was also an absolute delight to watch the work of so many brilliant, witty and wildly entertaining directors, and to find Please among such vibrant and clever programme.
